The estrous cycle controls when a mare is sexually receptive to a stallion, and helps to prepare physically the sea for conception. It usually occurs during the spring and summer months, although some may be sexually receptive mares in late autumn, and is controlled by photoperiod (length of day), the first cycle activated when the days begin to lengthen. The estrus cycle takes about 19-22 days, the average is 21 days. As the days shorten, the sea returns in a period where it is not sexually receptive, known as anestrus. Anestrus prevent the sea from conceiving in the winter months, which would result in foaling during his hardest by the ‘year, a time when it would be more difficult for the colt to survive. This cycle has 2 stages:
Estro, or follicular, stage: 5-7 days long, when the sea is sexually recepetive a stallion. Estrogeno is secreted by the follicle. Ovulation occurs in the final 24-48 hours of inspiration.
Diestrus or Luteal Phase: 14-15 days long, the sea is not sexually recepetive the stallion. The body luteum secretes progesterone.
Although 16% of mares double ovulations (which allows them to twins), this does not affect the time of estrus or diestrus.

Effect on reproductive system during the estrous cycle
Changes in hormone levels can have a major influence on the physical characteristics of the reproductive organs of the sea, thereby, or prevent, since its conception.
Uterus: increased levels of estrogen cause edema within the uterus, making it feel heavy, and the uterus loses its tone. This reduces edema following ovulation, and increases muscle tone. High levels of progesterone not cause edema within the uterus. The uterus during anestrus becomes flaccid.
Cervix: cervix relaxes right before estrus occurs, and the increase in cervical secretions. High levels of progesterone (during diestrus) causes the cervix to close.
Vagina: the portion of the vagina near the neck becomes engorged with blood right before estrus. The vagina becomes relaxed and secretions increase.
Vulva: relaxes begins right before estrus. It becomes dry and close tightly during diestrus.
